The word ‘Atoll’ comes from Dhivehi, which is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in Maldives. Charles Darwin used the name in ‘The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs’ to describe a limestone island partially surrounded by a live coral reef. Live coral thrives only in tropical waters.
Sumba Island is a lone coral atoll that lies adjacent to the Indonesian archipelago of volcanic origins. Sumba drifted off the Australian contentment a few hundred million years ago. By its coral nature Sumba is surrounded by live barrier reefs. The south coast is open to an unabated Indian Ocean swell, which creates world class surf waves that are no longer a well-kept secret of nature.
The Indonesian government is the only political body in the world that supports surfing events as an ‘avant-guard’ to tourist development. Sumba Island is being groomed as the next Bali; large capital investments are having a stunning impact. Two new airports, dozens of new flights daily, new roads and infrastructure are now on line.
Did we mention the friendly people? About twenty thousand tourists visit Sumba per year; that number is poised to grow exponentially. Some visitors are passionate about the world class waves, some about the untouched reefs, and some about the crystal bays teaming with record breaking fish; most love the people and their ancient culture.
Our team has been trekking the south coast of Sumba Island for over ten years; we have identified, surveyed, certified and purchased scores stunning beach properties.
